Can I run my horse after treatment??
This is a question I hear all the time. No matter what treatment is performed, whether chiropractic, acupuncture, therapeutic laser ..., none of these treatments will prevent you from running your horse. BUT -- during my exam I may find conditions that require further treatments or rest --- suspensory injury, sole abscesses, etc --- I will make you aware of problems I see and give you my recommendations. It is up to you to decide.
When receiving a chiropractic, acupuncture, tui-na ... treatment, several things happen to the body.
- Movement will be more relaxed immediately as restrictions are released.
- Muscle spasms will decrease immediately resulting in decreased pain and improved performance.
- A neurogenic reflex will occur as signals are sent to the central nervous system and the body resets itself. This occurs over a 5-7 day period of time.
In summary, you should see immediate improvement in movement but full effects are not seen for several days.
Following chiropractic treatment, I recommend you walk your horse around so they can adjust their body to the increased motion. Some horses will be stiff the day after treatment. Ask me about my recommendations for bute or equioxx use to decrease this normal response.
